Join Pack 97 on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 9:00 AM for a 3-mile hike of High Shoals Falls Loop Trail. Highlights include a beautiful 80-foot waterfall, hiking along Jacob Fork River, crossing the river upstream of the falls, and going over rough terrain on numerous boardwalks.  More information at http://www.ncparks.gov/south-mountains-state-park.

This is a backpacking trip.  To participate in backpacking, you must be a Bear or above and have earned your hiking stick (20 miles).  There are 6 packs available for this hike--priority will be given by registration date, so register today!

The address is 3001 South Mountain Park Ave, Connelly Springs, NC 28612.

Directions: The park is south of Morganton, about one hour thirty minutes from St. Mark. There are several ways to get there and all involve making many turns. The shortest is as follows: Take NC73 across the Catawba River at the Cowans Ford Dam. After 16.4 miles turn right onto NC27 West. Continue 4.8 miles then turn right onto W. Main Street and go through downtown Lincolnton (at one point you you have circle around the Lincoln County Civil Courthouse which is in the middle of the road). On the other side of the courthouse, Main street ends and becomes Riverside Drive/NC 27. Follow the road out of town 15.2 miles and turn right on NC18 North. Stay to left and continue on NC18 N for about .7 miles and then turn left onto Old State Hwy 18. In about 2.6 miles turn left onto Bradshaw Rd. Continue for .7 miles. Turn right onto Gus Peeler Rd. and continue for .4 miles. Turn left onto Mt. Gilead Rd. and continue for 1.1 miles. Turn right on Ward Gap Rd. and continue for .8 miles. Finally Turn left onto South Mountains Park Ave. Meet at the Jacob Fork parking area at the end of the road.

Pack 97 Intro to Backpacking
The intro to backpacking program will run year around in coordination with the hiking program. The backpacking program will serve to prepare older Cub Scouts for high adventure programs traditionally found in Boy Scouts. It will allow experienced hikers to become familiar with backpacking and offers educational components focused on backpacking safety, equipment, trail and food preparation and leave no trace principles.
  • The program is restricted to Bear and Webelos scouts who have earned their 20 miler hiking award.
  • The backpacking program follows the same schedule as Pack 97's Pack 97's 2014-2015 Hiking Schedule. Check the pack website in early spring for announcements on the backpack campout.
  • The program flyer has details on the program including a list of tiers and awards.
